Wildcats go cold in second half, fall to BNC rival Gaylord

Coming off of an important Big North Conference win on the road at Traverse City West, the Alpena High girls basketball team welcomed BNC foe Gaylord in the teams’ annual ‘Pink Game’ with proceeds going to Friends Together.

Unfortunately, the Wildcats (3-8, 1-3 BNC) couldn’t build off of the momentum they gained a week ago as Alpena fell to the Blue Devils (9-5, 3-1 BNC) by a final score of 59-40.

The two schools went toe-to-toe for during the first half as the Wildcats trailed 15-13 after one quarter and continued to scratch and claw, but trailed 31-27 at the break.

The turning point in the game came in the third quarter as the Wildcats were outscored 21-7 in the third quarter and fell into a big hole that they couldn’t get out of as the difference in the game was a lopsided third quarter.

After a solid first half offensively, Alpena couldn’t get back into a rhythm, scoring just 13 points in the second half.

The Wildcats were led by Kiera who scored a team high 12 points and Reese Wisnieski added 11 points in the loss.

Alpena will be back in action on Monday when the Wildcats travel to Alcona to take on the Tigers at 7:30 p.m.
