Today is Veterans Day – a day devoted to the men and women of the U.S. armed forces and those killed in battle.
Originally called Armistice Day, Veterans Day is always recognized on November 11 and was originally chosen to commemorate the end of World War I, in 1918.
After World War II it was recognized as a day to pay tribute to all service members, and in 1954 it was designated as Veterans Day.
An annual ceremony of events is being held at 11 o’clock this morning, at Little Flanders Field in Alpena. Some of the events include the placing of wreaths, a rifle salute, and the playing of Taps.
Col. James Rossi will be the guest speaker. Rossi is the commander of the Combat Readiness Training Center.
Dan Perge will be honored with the Veteran of the Year award.
