City of Alpena firefighters were back at the Decorative Panels International (DPI) plant shortly before 7 o’clock last night, after a fire in the “dryer area” caused thick smoke to pour into nearby neighborhoods.
Fire Chief Bill Forbush said plant employees played a “critical role” in identifying hot spots in hidden areas, and because of their help the fire was extinguished in under two hours.
Forbush also said Community Risk Reduction Captain Andy Marceau has been working with the plant to enhance their safety programs and procedures, and an updated pre-plan was helpful in fighting the fire.
No one was injured, and the plant continued operating. The cause of the fire was not released.
