The Northeast Michigan League of Women Voters March “Lunch Bunch” and film discussion will be held Friday at the Black Sheep in downtown Alpena.
In honor of Women’s History month, the post-lunch discussion will center around the 2015 documentary “The Babushkas of Chernobyl.” Bubushka stands for older woman or grandmother in Poland and Russia.
Winner of multiple awards, the documentary focuses on the women who returned to their homes in the exclusion zone following the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster and who have resided there for years. The film is available free of charge on Freevee or on Kanopy, which is available through the public library in Alpena.
Interested residents are invited to the Black Sheep for lunch on their own dime followed by a conversation on the documentary. Participants need not view the film prior to Friday’s event, which starts at noon.
