Family cat perishes in fire on Avery St.

PRESS RELEASE FROM ROB EDMONDS JR., CITY OF ALPENA FIRE DEPARTMENT:

On Thursday May 12, 2022, at approximately 7:15 pm the Alpena Fire Department was requested to 116 Avery Street for a smoke coming from the residence-possible structure fire.

Upon arrival at the residence, fire crews were advised the homeowner was safely out of the residence and the family cat was still inside.

Initially fire crews were met with heavy smoke and no visible fire. Upon deeper entry into the structure, fire was located in the bathroom/kitchen area of the building. Extinguishment and ventilation were performed with further overhaul and investigation into the cause and origin of the fire.

Fire crews remained on scene for approximately 1 ¼ hours. 5 on-duty personnel initially responded with an additional 4 off-duty responding from home. No injuries to civilians or fire personnel.

A family cat perished as a result of smoke inhalation after life saving measures were attempted without success by EMS crews.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
