Construction picking up in Alpena

The construction season is starting to pick up in the City of Alpena after a slow start to the year.

A total of 24 building permits were issued by the city in April for projects valued at over $646,000. That compares to 13 permits issued in March. A total of 34 permits were issued in April 2021 for projects valued at nearly $531,000.

The majority of last month’s permits, 19, were issued to homeowners for new siding, roofs, doors and windows and more.

The largest permit of over $240,000 was issued to a downstate contractor who is replacing the roof on the Ramada Inn. The city pulled a permit of nearly $74,000 to repair the Blair Street pier.

The city has issued 62 building permits through the end of April for projects of nearly 3.6 million. That compares to the first four months of 2021 when 105 permits were issued for projects valued at over $8.2 million.
