City issues highest number of building permits in August

The City of Alpena issued 64 building permits in August, the highest total of any month this year.

Those permits were pulled for projects valued at an estimated $1.7 million.

A total of 49 building permits were issued in August 2022 for projects valued at $1.9 million.

Of the 64 permits issued in August, 51 were residential, 12 commercial and one industrial. The majority of residential permits were for new roofs, siding, doors, windows and decks. The largest permit of $150,000 was issued to a homeowner on 3rd Avenue for a remodel and addition.

Two of the largest commercial permits, for projects exceeding $450,000 were issued to All Saints Catholic School for a new roof and replacement of some gutters. Alpena Public Schools was issued a permit of $184,000, the majority of which is going toward a new American with Disabilities Act compliant ramp for the auto shop.

The city has issued a total of 309 building permits through August for projects estimated at over $13 million. That compares to last year when 274 permits were issued for projects valued at $7.5 million.
