August water level of Lake Huron same as July

Despite slightly above average amounts of precipitation last month, the mean or average water level of Lake Huron was unchanged from July.

The lake’s water level in August was 579.72’, more than 4 ½” above the long-term average, but down approximately 4 ½” from one year ago.

According to data from the Army Corps of Engineers Detroit District, August’s water level was down more than two-feet from the maximum August level of 582.09’ from 2020; and up a little over three-feet from the all-time low of 576.67’ in 1964.

The Corps is expecting the lake level to begin its slow seasonal decline this month, and is forecasting it to possibly fall below the long-term average by December.
