Gas prices down after spiking prior to holiday weekend

Gas prices in Michigan are down after spiking prior to the Labor Day holiday weekend.

AAA says the new statewide average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas is about $3.18, down three cents over the week.

The cheapest price for gas was found in Benton Harbor at $3.09 per gallon. The highest price of $3.27 was found in metro Detroit.

As of early Tuesday morning, motorists in the Alpena area were paying an average of about $2.98 for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel, down 10 cents from one week ago.

AAA expects prices to remain fairly steady this week.
