The new statewide average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Michigan is up, and has set a record high for 2021.
AAA says the new average price of $3.27 per gallon is up nine cents over the week, and $1.06 more than this time last year.
Of the cities it surveys, AAA found the most expensive gas in metro Detroit and Lansing where it’s about $3.29 per gallon. The lowest price of $3.23 was found in both Benton Harbor and Traverse City.
As of early Tuesday morning, drivers in the Alpena area were paying an average of about $3.24 for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel, up 26 cents from one week ago.
AAA officials say that despite a slight decline in demand, prices at the pumps remain high at least partially because crude oil prices are still over $70 a barrel. Officials predict gas prices will remain above $3 per gallon through the busy summer driving season.
