Taxpayers to get first look inside new jail during public tours

The community can catch its first glimpse of the inside of the new Alpena County Jail during an open house event this weekend.

After more than two years of construction, delays, mishaps and successes, the approximate $11.6 million jail is ready to unveil to the public.

Residents can tour the facility on Friday from 2 to 8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m.

No personal items will be allowed inside the building, including purses or bags, cameras, phones and weapons.

The sheriff’s office opened inside the new jail building in May. Inmates are expected to be moved over sometime in August.
