City extends residency radius for emergency workers

The Alpena Municipal Council has agreed to extend a required residency radius for emergency personnel, including fire, police and department of public works employees.

Those workers will now be able to live 25 miles from the nearest city limit, versus the previous mark of 20 miles.

City staff asked for the change for a couple of reasons, including the difficulty of recruiting emergency workers, and the challenging housing market, which has more buyers then sellers.

In addition, staff is currently interested in hiring a woman who lives 23 miles outside of the city.

This is the second time the municipal council has approved a change in the residency requirement in less than a year. In November of 2020, it approved extending the residency radius for non-emergency employees from 20 to 30 miles.
