April: A little warmer & a little drier

April’s weather was fairly typical across the majority of northern Michigan, although most places were a little warmer and a little drier than the long-term averages.

That was true from Alpena to Traverse City.

Meteorologists from the National Weather Service in Gaylord said the mean or average temperature in the Alpena area last month was 43.3 degrees 1.7 degrees above the long-term average. A high of 68 degrees was reached April 9, and a low of 17 degrees was recorded on the 2nd.

The area received 1.96 inches of precipitation, a little less than half an inch below the norm. The yearly total of 4.66 inches is down more than 2.5 inches.

Forecasters said 0.8 inches of snow fell in Alpena, down 5 inches from a typical April. The seasonal total of 52.5 inches is down 31.8 inches from a normal winter season.
