New city planner from Seattle burb

The new planner for the city of Alpena is moving to town from the Seattle, Washington area.

Andrea Kares will begin her new career with the city on October 12. She replaces former planning and development director Adam Poll who left to become the new executive director of the local chamber of commerce.

Kares is originally from Michigan. She attended high school in Allegan and received her bachelor degree from Grand Valley State University.

After college, Kares moved to Washington where she began a career as a permit technician working on the Microsoft Refresh project. She was promoted to assistant planner and then associate planner for the City of Redmond which has a population over 70,000 and is located about 15 minutes east of Seattle.

“I am excited to move back to my home state and work for such a beautiful city,” Kares said.

In her spare time, Kares enjoys hiking and spending time with family and pets.
