It shouldn’t take Alpena County Commissioners too long to reach a decision on who should fill a vacant seat on the board through the end of the year.

The seat was vacated in August when former commissioner Ronald McDonald died of a medical condition.

Kevin Osbourne was the only resident to apply for the vacancy when the filing deadline passed Monday at noon. Osbourne is also the person chosen by the local Republican Party to replace McDonald on the November ballot.

Commissioners are holding a special meeting Wednesday morning, in part to interview Osbourne. It is doubtful, but they could turn down his application.

Osbourne will be the only person listed on the November ballot since McDonald was running unopposed, however he be challenged by a write-in candidate. Osbourne ran against McDonald in 2018 but lost.
