Two bodies were recovered from a fire Thursday that torched a barn on Long Lake Road.

Lt. Tom Tolen of the Alpena Township Fire Department said he and his crew arrived on scene shortly after 1 p.m. and found the barn fully engulfed. He said it burned “very hot” and that the structure was a total loss.

Tolen confirmed that initially firefighters did not know if anyone was inside the barn. He was later told that two people were “unaccounted for.” Tolen said crews were on scene until about 10:30 last night, assisting the Michigan State Police with its investigation. He could not confirm whether the bodies of two people were recovered from the ashes, saying it was an ongoing investigation by the MSP.

Messages for the MSP were not initially returned however True North Radio has received confirmation from several sources that two bodies were found inside the barn. Their identities and cause of death is still unknown.

It is also not yet known if the fire was an accident or if it might have been intentionally set.

Tolen said one or more members of his crew sustained minor injuries.
