Two more counties in northeast Michigan are receiving federal funding to supplement local food and shelter programs.

The U.S. Congress has appropriated $120 million to supplement and expand emergency food and shelter programs, some of which is headed to Alcona and Montmorency counties.

Alcona is receiving $7,010 and Montmorency $9,630. Local boards made up of representatives from food pantries, charitable groups, human service agencies, government and local churches will now allocate the funds to those programs most deserving.

Organizations interested in applying for funding should contact United Way of Northeast Michigan at 354-2221. The deadline to apply is Thursday, August 27. Applications are available from the United Way and on the United Way website.
