Contamination audit to be performed on local recycling bins

Submitted by on August 13, 2020 – 12:30 amNo Comment

An audit is being conducted to determine the level of contamination in some recycling bins around Alpena County.

The Alpena Resource Recovery Facility has secured a grant to conduct the audit and pay a few volunteers to help perform it.

In addition, all county residents will receive a mailer this week, discussing the dos and don’ts of what can and cannot be placed into recycling bins. When citizens place the wrong items or garbage into bins it contaminates the entire container. A single piece of paper tossed into a plastics bin will contaminate that bin. Contamination is a problem locally and across the entire nation.

Next Monday an audit will be conducted on the recycling bins at the site of the former Habitat for Humanity ReStore and Neiman’s Family Market. People interested in helping with the audit will be paid $15 an hour. For additional information call 464-7066.

A second audit will be performed at a later date and the results will then be compared to the first audit to determine if the level of contamination is improving.
