DDA cancels downtown fall events

The coronavirus has claimed two more events in northeast Michigan.

The Alpena Downtown Development Authority (DDA) has cancelled its popular Chili Chowder Cook-Off and Bard at the Bar due to concerns and restrictions surrounding COVID-19.

“The whole purpose of the Chili Chowder Cook-Off is to bring our community together with a little friendly competition to celebrate the beginning of the fall season and encourage people to gather,” said Kingsli Kraft, marketing and outreach coordinator for the DDA. “Unfortunately, there is just no way we can hold the event safely in a way that holds true to the purpose of the event and makes sense for both our competitors and community.”

Bard at the Bar, a Shakespeare-themed bar crawl, was a joint venture between the DDA and Thunder Bay Theatre. Kraft said that in addition to COVID-19, the recent fire at the theatre played in a role in the decision to cancel this year’s event.
