A total of 21 candidates have applied to become the next superintendent of Alpena Public Schools (APS).

The district has hired the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) to conduct a search to replace former superintendent John VanWagoner who left in July for his new position with Traverse City Area Public Schools.

The deadline to apply for the top spot at APS was last Friday at 4 p.m. School board president Gordon Snow says a superintendent search committee will meet with a MASB consultant next Thursday to whittle down the list of candidates to be interviewed to between 5 and 7. The committee will also choose a list of questions for interviews, and review the results of a survey residents were able to complete to have a say in what they want in a new school leader.

Interviews are expected to be held near the end of August with final interviews of the top two candidates held in early September. Snow hopes to have an offer to the top candidate by mid-September.

The school board has established an annual salary range for the position of $135,000 to $145,000.
