The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has received funding for a land purchase in Montmorency County; and the City of Onaway is receiving money for a recreation development project.

The two grants are part of 78 totaling $28.7 million recently approved by Governor Gretchen Whitmer. The money will come through the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund.

The DNR will use $225,000 to acquire 200 acres of unique forestland with highly productive wildlife habitat in Montmorency County. The property includes over 4,550 feet of the East Branch of the Black River and 1,060 feet of Rattlesnake Creek frontage. The property is adjacent to state land on two sides and acquisition will provide access to an additional 1,500 feet of river frontage on state land that is currently inaccessible.

The city of Onaway is using its nearly $205,000 for development of a trailhead for the North Eastern State Trail. The project is located near downtown and includes family restrooms and a pavilion that will provide shelter to trail users and will also provide a location for a farmer’s market, picnicking, and many other activities.
