Council considers changes at Evergreen Cemetery

The Alpena Municipal Council is considering some changes to the rules and regulations at Evergreen cemetery.

Mayor Matt Waligora brought the subject up at a council meeting in June after he was approached by a local funeral home on behalf of a family that was denied placement of a laser engraved stainless steel headstone for a loved one.

That type of headstone is currently prohibited at the cemetery even though they have become more popular in other places due to the lower cost compared to more traditional granite headstones.

City engineer Rich Sullenger said one of the reasons the headstones are banned is because they are typically cemented into the ground and can not be moved, if necessary. He said headstones are sometimes temporarily moved to allow maintenance and other equipment through, for example.

Waligora would also like to remove a restriction on motorcycles from the cemetery, along with a ban on dogs, which can be seen walking through the cemetery grounds with their owners on a regular basis.

The changes were supposed to be discussed by council at this week’s meeting but the discussion was postponed.
