The clerk, treasurer and finance director for the city of Alpena is projecting a surplus for the 2019-20 fiscal year that ended June 30, reversing an earlier prediction that the general fund budget would end the year in the red.

Anna Soik provided the municipal council this week, with an overview of the general fund budget for the 4th quarter of the fiscal year.

Soik is estimating that revenues ended the year at approximately $9.92 million and expenses at $9.54 million for a surplus of nearly $384,000. When the budget was first drafted in June 2019, it called for a deficit of $280,542.

The turnaround can be attributed to a number of items in the budget, including savings in parks and recreation, the cemetery and the police department, mostly due to unfilled positions.

The final numbers won’t be known until an audit of the books is conducted later this year.
