One dead, two injured following crash on US-23, north of Cheboygan

PRESS RELEASE FROM CHEBOYGAN COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE:

Cheboygan County, Mackinaw Township-Sheriff Clarmont stated his department was dispatched to a fatal crash on US-23 near Freedom Rd on July 28, 2020 at 6:49pm.

The investigation revealed Jason Nixon 18 YOA from Westland MI was traveling N/B on US-23 operating a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer when he lost control and slid sideways into the S/B lane in the path of a 2011 Toyota Highlander operated by Danny Bushman 36 YOA from Mackinaw City MI.

The Highlander collided head on into the passenger side of the Trailblazer causing the Trailblazer to flip on its side and the Highlander to run off the roadway.

John Spohr 18 YOA from Garden City MI who was the front seat passenger in the Trailblazer, died at the scene. Nixon was transported to McLaren Petoskey by Cheboygan Life Support Systems with serious
injury. Mr. Bushman was the only occupant of the Highlander and he was also transported to McLaren Petoskey by Cheboygan Life Support Systems with serious injury.

At the time of the crash it was raining. Speed and lack of tread on the Trailblazer tires contributed to the crash. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the accident. Everyone was wearing a seatbelt. The families have been notified.

Assisting on scene was Cheboygan Life Support Systems, Emmet Life Support, Mackinaw City Fire Department, and Inverness Fire Department.

The accident remains under investigation.
