MI gas prices rise in advance of 4th of July holiday weekend

Motorists in Michigan are paying higher prices at the pumps in advance of the 4th of July holiday weekend.

According to AAA, the new statewide average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas is about $2.20, up 9 cents over the week.

Drivers were paying approximately $2.81 a gallon last year at this time.

Of the cities it surveys, AAA found the highest price for gas in Marquette where it’s about $2.28 per gallon. The cheapest price of $2.07 was found in Traverse City.

As of early Tuesday morning, drivers in the Alpena area were paying an average of about $2.14 for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel, up 10 cents from one week ago.

AAA says higher prices can be blamed on increased demand. “If demand continues to trend higher, motorists will likely see pump prices continue to increase through early July,” said Adrienne Woodland, a spokesperson for AAA.
