The city of Alpena is paying tribute to Alpena High School graduates by proclaiming Friday, May 29 “High School Senior Recognition Day.”

More than 280 students will be graduating from the high school and ACES Academy this year.

The city’s proclamation reads, in part, “…it is the utmost importance that we, as a community, do all that we can to encourage and celebrate these graduates during this time when our traditional ways of celebrating them are not possible.”

The proclamation is making reference to a non-traditional, virtual graduation ceremony in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A salute to the class of 2020 is also being held Friday, from 7 to 9 p.m. A senior slideshow will be scrolling on the scoreboard at Wildcat Stadium that night. 107.7 the Bay will also have special programming honoring the seniors at that time.  A virtual commencement ceremony is being held two days later; and a drive through diploma pickup event is scheduled for June 13.
