The superintendent of Alpena Public Schools is likely leaving.

The board of education for Traverse City Areas Public Schools (TCAPS) Wednesday night, selected Dr. John VanWagoner for the open superintendent’s position.

VanWagoner was one of two finalists for the job.

Members gave the board president authority to move forward with negotiations on a contract with VanWagoner. That contract is expected to be presented to the TCAPS board at a June 8 meeting.

VanWagoner and the APS board will now have to negotiate an out on his contract. VanWagoner has been the superintendent of APS since mid-August 2016. He was previously an associate superintendent with the Shiawassee Regional Education Service District.

APS board president Gordon Snow told True North Radio that members will likely reach out to the Michigan Association of School Boards for a pre-search workshop that will provide some guidance on the search process for a new superintendent, along with a timeline.
