Alpena County Commissioners believe they can safely open the county for business, and bring back employees who were placed on furlough when the coronavirus starting spreading across the U.S.

All county buildings will reopen Tuesday, and staff will be brought back the same day.

Those decision were reached following a discussion by the county’s finance committee Wednesday.

Members of the committee noted that county employees are protected from the public due to recent upgrades, including bullet-proof glass in all offices. In addition, it was noted that the county has an ample supply of personal protection equipment for employees, as needed.

Visitors to county buildings will be expected to follow safety guidelines and social distancing orders, including wearing a mask. A plan is in place to set tables of masks at the entrance to all buildings for residents who show up without one.

The reopening of all buildings does not include the courts, which have been meeting virtually for hearings. Rules are currently being developed to phase in court proceedings into the future.
