Alpena County is receiving a projected grant of $48,132 to improve the quality of its recycling program.

In addition, the county will receive a wide range of technical assistance and in-kind support from The Recycling Partnership during implementation of the improvement program.

Stan Mischley is manager of the Alpena Resource Recovery Facility and said the grant will basically be used to address the issue of recycling contamination through an extensive campaign that will ultimately ensure the integrity of the recycling system remains strong.

“Last year we spent nearly $10,000 on contamination related issues,” said Mischley. “We have around a 20% to 25% rate of contamination and that’s not including the wages spent to process the bad material. The Recycling Partnership has the experience and expertise to help guide us through the process.”

A virtual meeting between The Recycling Partnership and local officials is scheduled for May 5, to fine tune a timeline and milestones for the project.

The Recycling Quality Improvement Grant is coming through the Recycling Partnership and the Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE).
