Alpena Public Schools board of education member Stephanie Shafto has stepped down less than one year after joining the board.

Shafto’s official last day was Monday. She was appointed to the seat in mid-June 2019 following the resignation of former board member Jackie Krawzcak.

Shafto was one of four candidates to interview for the seat.

APS is now accepting applications for persons interested in filling the vacancy through the end of the year. The appointed member can choose to run for a new four-year term in the upcoming November Presidential Election.

Candidates must submit a letter of interest and their qualifications to board president Gordon Snow no later than 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8. Letters should be sent to the district’s business office on Gordon Road.

The board of education will review submitted materials and then interview selected candidates.

For questions contact APS Superintendent John VanWagoner at 358-5042.

School board members serve without pay.
