A list of annual graduation and dropout rates from the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) for the 2018-19 academic year reveals a mixed bag of results for schools in northeast Michigan.

While seven area schools scored above the statewide graduation rate, four of those schools took a step backward while the state average improved over the previous year.

Onaway was the top performing school district in northeast Michigan with 100% of students graduating on time. Alcona was next at 94.44%, Rogers City 93.65%, Posen 90.91%, Hillman 90%, Atlanta 84.62% and Alpena 81.63%. Alpena’s number is typically lower due to the graduation rate at ACES Academy; however ACES showed the most improvement in 2018-19, increasing to 65.12% from 39.47% the previous year.

Alpena, Onaway and Posen all posted higher graduation rates than last year. Alcona, Atlanta, Hillman and Rogers City posted lower numbers.

The statewide graduation rate in 2018-19 was 81.41%, up from the 2017-18 rate of 80.64%.

As for the percentage of dropouts, rates at all area schools improved in 2018-19 versus the previous year, with the exception of Alpena Public Schools. APS’s rate of 9.34% was also above the statewide rate of 8.36%. Alpena High School’s rate went from 3.55% in 2017-18 to 5.47% last year.
