Hospice seeks veteran volunteers in Alpena & surrounding area

Hospice of Michigan is looking for compassionate volunteers to help patients and families dealing with life-limiting illnesses in Alpena, Ossineke, Alcona and surrounding communities.

The agency is specifically looking for veteran volunteers to pair with patients who have a military background.

Hospice officials say vets who volunteer have a unique ability to relate and connect with other veterans at a critical time in life due to shared military training or history. The shared bond typically opens a door of trust and communications.

“Our volunteers often tell us their experience is a gift to them,” says Kathy Lietaert, volunteer program manager for Hospice of Michigan. “So many tell me they appreciate the support they receive from the dedicated staff here at Hospice of Michigan in how to best meet the needs of our patients and families, while making the most out of their volunteer experience.”

No special experience is required and training is provided to anyone 18 years-old and above. Volunteers can pledge as few as two hours a week to visit patients in their community. The next training session will be held on Thursday, March 19. To register, and for questions, call 231-779-5409.

Hospice also encourages couples to volunteer together, as well as teenagers along with their parents.
