The Alpena airport is starting off 2020 much like it ended 2019 – with an increase in the number of flyers.

A total of 995 enplanements were counted last month, up 158, or 18.9 percent from January 2019.

“We are off to a good start,” said Steve Smigelski, airport manager.

Smigelski is hopeful the new approximate $11.6 million passenger terminal building will provide a bump to passenger numbers in 2020. The new building is nearly complete with a scheduled grand opening date of Monday, March 2. A ribbon cutting ceremony is planned for May.

The airport finished 2019 with an unofficial enplanement total of 12,777, the highest number of flyers since 2014.
