Alpena Public Schools is in the early stages of putting together a new Career and Technical Education (CTE) program that could someday help with the ongoing teacher shortage in Michigan.

Administrators are developing a Teacher Cadet course that would begin the process for students seeking a career in education.

The high school course will be designed for kids in the Alpena Early College program, providing a smooth transition into Alpena Community College.

Students outside of the Early College program could participate as well.

The school district received a $66,800 Early College grant that will be used to fund the new program. Superintendent John VanWagoner hopes to be able to offer the course to kids by the 2021-22 school year.
