A Cheboygan County man was arrested over the weekend for allegedly stabbing his wife multiple times.

The incident was said to have occurred Saturday evening, in a vehicle near Indian River.

According to the Michigan State Police, the victim was able to get out of the vehicle after the stabbing, but the suspect chased her down and continued the assault with the knife.

The man eventually fled the scene in the vehicle, leaving his wife behind.

A trooper from Gaylord located the suspect’s vehicle and a chase ensued. At one point police from Mackinaw City deployed stop sticks, however the suspect was able to avoid them.

The pursuit eventually ended southwest of Cheboygan when a state police trooper forced the suspect to lose control of his vehicle. The 38 year-old man from Topinabee was charged with fleeing and eluding police and drunk driving third offense. Additional charges from the assault are pending.

The man’s wife was taken to the hospital in Petoskey where she underwent surgery and was expected to make a full recovery.
