A number of Martin Luther King Jr. Day events are being held in Alpena, and some of them start before the official holiday on Monday.

Thursday, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 pm., La’Ron Williams, award winning African-American storyteller and workshop trainer, will use a blend of storytelling, interactive exercises, lecture, and dialogue to identify major illusions that prevent society from effectively working to achieve harmony across racial lines.

The program, entitled “Racism is NOT that Guy in the Pointy Hood,” will be held inside Room 106 of the Newport Center at Alpena Community College. For additional information call 354-6031.

And a workshop called “White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism” will be held at First Congregational Church Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The $20 fee includes materials and lunch. To register call 356-1795.
