An 88 year-old Alpena woman was killed Monday, when three vehicles collided on Genshaw Road, near Princeton Avenue.

The accident happened around 12:45 in the afternoon.

According to a preliminary investigation by the Michigan State Police, an 18 year-old Alpena woman was traveling north on Genshaw when she swerved into the opposite lane to avoid a pickup truck that was stopped and waiting for another vehicle to turn.  The woman’s SUV made minor contact with the truck before colliding head on with a Toyota Prius that was headed south.

The woman in the SUV and the driver of the pickup were not hurt.  All three people in the Prius were injured and taken to the hospital.  One of the passengers, Martha Krajnik of Alpena, was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

The condition of the other two passengers is unknown.

The crash remains under investigation and alcohol does not appear to be a factor. Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact police at 354-4101.

Once the investigation is complete, a report will be forwarded to the prosecutor’s office to see if any of the drivers should face charges.

Troopers were assisted at the scene by sheriff deputies, Alpena Township fire fighters and paramedics and firemen from the City of Alpena.
