In the end, the Alpena Area Chamber of Commerce did not need to go far to find a new director of economic development.

Michael Mahler started his new position with the chamber Monday.

Mahler is the former President and CEO of First Federal of Northern Michigan, and stayed with the company through the merger and changeover to mBank, retiring in June, 2019. He is chairman of the Alpena Downtown Development Authority (DDA) board of directors, president of the city’s Brownfield Authority Board, and president of the First Federal of Northern Michigan Legacy Foundation Board.

“There were only a couple of roles I was willing to come out of retirement for and this was one of them,” Mahler said. “I hope to be able to leverage my contacts around the state and within NE Michigan that I gained in my tenure as a banker to help do good for an area that has been so good to me and my family.”

Mahler replaces former economic development director Jim Klarich who stepped down at the end of December, after approximately 8 years.
