Alpena County Regional Airport is celebrating its most successful year since 2014.

The unofficial enplanement total from 2019 is 12,777, and the total could end up even higher once charter flights are added in.

Last year’s total equates to an increase of 1,603 enplanements or 14.3 percent over the 11,174 flyers counted in 2018.

The airport last topped 12,000 flyers in 2014, when 12,592 were counted. Nearly 16,000 were counted in 2013.

“This gives me great hope the new terminal will push us over 13,000 next year,” said airport manager Steve Smigelski.

The approximate $11.6 million passenger terminal building is nearly complete. A ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for January 16.
