Alpena County Commissioners have signed off on an estimated $370,000 expansion project for the local Senior Citizens Center.

Center director Annie Hepburn recently told commissioners the center has received a $200,000 Allen Foundation, Inc. grant to expand and renovate the kitchen area.

Hepburn and her team are pursuing other grants to cover the remaining approximately $174,000 to complete the project.

In addition to expanding the kitchen area 12 feet by 18 feet, the renovation includes a “teaching kitchen” space that will be used to teach persons with chronic diseases how to prepare meals that are better for themselves and more nutritious.

Hepburn hopes to have the remaining monies in hand before the end of 2020.

Commissioners needed to sign off on the project because the county owns the building, while the senior center owns the parking lot.
