An Alpena mom has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting her son, one-day before her trial was set to begin.

Joann Marie Massengill-King, 61, has pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal sexual conduct first degree with an agreement for 10-20 years in prison.

If she had taken her case to trial and lost, she was facing up to life.

Massengill-King sexually assaulted her biological son repeatedly over a two-year period, from 2007-2008. The boy was eventually removed from the home and is now living with a new family.

Prosecutor Ed Black isn’t entirely pleased with the outcome of the case or the settlement agreement. “While it is not what I wanted and my emotions wanted more, after consultation with the family it was decided to offer the plea to provide closure for this extraordinary young man and his family,” Black said. “He has waited for justice since 2008. Now the process for moving forward in his and their lives begins.”

Massengill-King’s former husband, Walter Massengill, is serving a life sentence for also sexually assaulting his son over the same timeframe. He was found guilty following a jury trial in September.
