The Rogers City Downtown Development Authority (DDA) has received a $65,000 state grant for a redevelopment project that city leaders believe will draw visitors to the community.

The grant from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) will help the DDA determine whether a three-acre site near Huron and 1st streets is contaminated.

The site formerly was home to a lumber yard and bulk petroleum storage facility.

Once the environmental condition is known, the DDA will partner with Bayview Holdings LLC on its proposed redevelopment of a boutique hotel and cottages, transforming the underutilized waterfront parcel.

“This is one of the most exciting and important projects to our community in a long time,” City Manager Joe Hefele said. “This has long been a blighted spot along our lakeshore within the shadow of our municipal marina. These funds will help transform the property into a development that will draw people to our community, beautify our lakeshore, and provide an economic shot in the arm to our business corridor.”

The environmental assessment is expected to be completed in the spring.
