APS: Why not give a child a book for Christmas?

Submitted by on December 2, 2019 – 12:26 amNo Comment

In a continuing effort to promote literacy, Alpena Public Schools is encouraging parents and others to consider giving books this holiday season.

The school district says books are a gift that provide short term enjoyment to the reader but also long term benefits.

Literacy builds the foundation for a child’s future academic success and economic well-being.

Residents can donate or pick up books by using the AMA-ESD freecycle program with locations at Alpena Boys and Girls Club, Ella White, Immanuel Lutheran, Hillman Elementary, Northern Lights Arena or St. Anne’s Parish Hall.

School officials say there are also thousands of e-books available for free-download locally through the Alpena County Public Library or at the Michigan e-library at mel.org.

APS encourages all families to help build their child’s literacy skills “for a great today and a better tomorrow!”
