The new Alpena city manager will start her duties next month.

The municipal council Monday night, inked a contract with Rachel Smolinki, who will take over for retiring city manager Greg Sundin December 23.

Smolinksi will start December 9, which gives her two weeks to work alongside Sundin until she formally takes over the title of city manager.

Smolinksi, the current Director of the Harbor Springs Downtown Development Authority, accepted a $95,000 salary, which is on the low end of the pay scale. Her employment contract provides up to $3,000 in relocation costs and 14 days of vacation in year one, which is a few days more then what is typically granted under the city’s administrative benefits.

The contract has a clause that states the municipal council can terminate the agreement at any time, with or without cause. If that were the case, Smolinski would receive three months pay and benefits. Smolinski can terminate the contract without cause as well, but must provide at least 30 days written notice.

Smolinksi underwent a full background check over the past few weeks, a psychological evaluation, drug screen, and a full physical.
