ReStore fire likely caused by electrical short

Investigators believe the Habitat for Humanity ReStore fire in Alpena was likely caused by an electrical short.

There is no evidence to suggest the fire was started intentionally.

It appears the electrical short occurred near the main entrance to the building, off the alley at 400 Chisholm Street.

Fire investigators from the Michigan State Police, Alpena City Police, and city and township fire departments combed the scene, and used a State Police drone to overfly and document the site to aid in recording the exact location of evidence.

In addition, photographs taken by many citizens and posted to social media were analyzed to document fire growth and additional clues.

Alpena Fire Community Risk Reduction Office Andy Marceau coordinated the investigation and said the department rarely calls in MSP fire investigators.  “These guys are the real experts with a lot more experience and resources,” said Marceau, who added, that the size of the building and significance to the community were factors in asking for help.
