The manager of the airport in Alpena says construction of a new passenger terminal building is moving along at a rapid pace and is on schedule for a mid-January opening.
The majority of the approximate $11.6 million project is being paid for with a $9 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration.
Manager Steve Smigelski gave the county’s finance committee a little update on the project Wednesday. He said crews are working steady on the interior of the building. He said the only snag, so far, is that the new passenger boarding bridge is currently four weeks behind.
He said that it due to some materials needed to construct the walkway, which will keep passengers out of the elements. The airport did not have a boarding bridge in the past.
Despite that piece of the project, Smigeslki said a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new terminal is tentatively set for January 16. He said passengers will using the building that same day.
