Horse club makes pitch for baseball field at fairgrounds

One of two groups interested in using the baseball field at the Alpena County Fairgrounds gave commissioners an overview of their vision Tuesday.

The county was ready to discontinue maintaining the field and level the concessions stand, dugouts and fence after the field went unused for the past two summers.

But two groups – Thundercats Softball and the local 4-H Horse Development Committee stepped forward and expressed an interest in the field.

Equine enthusiasts told county commissioners Tuesday, they would like to build a horse show arena on the property. They provided numerous reasons for why the current outdoor arena at the fairgrounds is too small, inadequate and potentially dangerous for both horses and riders. Representatives said a new and larger arena would attract more equestrians to events and allow for larger and safer shows.

They said the fairgrounds is an ideal location for an arena because it already houses a horse barn.

The fair board, Alpena 4-H, Alpena County Horsemen’s Club and others support the project.

The travel softball organization is expected to pitch their thoughts to commissioners in October.
