Administrators have chosen a new caterer for the Alpena County Jail.

The current provider has been serving inmate meals for the past nine years, having replaced the previous caterer amid allegations of over billing.

It was disclosed during the county’s finance committee meeting Monday, that current provider Waho’s Country Catering came in with the low bid for the contract at $2.50 a meal.

However, jail administrator Scott Gagnon told the committee that Waho’s did not submit all the specifications required on the bid document. He recommended the county instead hire Canteen Services, the next lowest bidder at $2.55 a meal.

Gagnon said Canteen Services also promotes safety in the kitchen, has an on staff dietitian, conducts structured inspections, and will train inmates in the kitchen.

A contract still needs to be reviewed by attorneys. The new 5-year deal would start in January 2020.
