North side residents to receive street improvements

Some residents on the north side of Alpena will be receiving street improvements after petitioning the city for a special assessment district to defray costs.

Property owners on Merchant Street, between Miller and Lake streets, will be getting new curb and gutter, a fresh and wider coat of asphalt, driveway aprons, sidewalks, and grass and trees between the sidewalk and street.

The total cost of the improvements is a little more than $223,000. Through the special assessment district, property owners living along that block of Merchant will pay, on average, about $1,000 each. The exact cost depends on the length of frontage along Merchant.

The project is expected to get underway the first week of October and be completed by the end of the month.

City council voted this week, to bill residents after the work is completed.
