Two Alpena High School seniors have been named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Approximately 16,000 semifinalists from across the United States have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million.

AHS seniors Matthew Fisher and Emeline Hanna are semifinalists in the 64th annual program.

To become a finalist, Fisher, Hanna and administrators at Alpena High must submit a detailed scholarship application. The application must contain Fisher’s and Hanna’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors received.

National Merit Scholarship winners of 2020 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July.
